It was November last year since we last visited Whilton Mill and I was looking forward to going back this month but we were greeted Friday morning with gale force winds and heavy rain! Not quite the welcome I had in mind!
As ever Shaun and Craig didn't let it bother them and the awning was in place and we were ready to go a few hours later. Only three in the team at Whilton this time with Alex Taylor and Harry Campey in Minimax and Tom Taylor in Junior. It was Toms first race meeting off novice plates and with an entry of around 50 he had his work cut out!
Practice went extremely well Alex Taylor was right on the pace straight from the off and in awful conditions. He and team mate Harry ran at the top of the time sheets all day.
Sunday brought the wets out again but didn't rain us any luck. Alex was 3rd in heat one only to run wide in the last corner and take to the grass still finishing 8th.. but then a puncture and a plug braking down condemned him to a disappointing qualifying spot.. Harry Campey was having an even worse day, rammed off twice in the heats left him starting at the back.
In Junior Tom's weekend was also on the slide. He too was rudely removed from the track twice and cud only qualify 17th in the B final. The team was under a cloud and needed a lift. It came in the Junior B final. I walked the track in the interval and was surprised to see everyone on the grid wearing slicks!! My mind was made up.
Wets fitted and race plan in place, Tom took to the track as some people laughed at our tyre call. They didn't laugh for long as Tom drove the race of his career cleverly driving into any water he could find to keep his tyre intact for the full eight laps. Tom drove past 16 karts to Finish a fantastic second and set the fastest lap by eight tenths to book his place in the A.
The awning was buzzing and it didn't finish there. Alex had more bad luck in the Minimax final with a battery fault this time but he still made up eight places and can be very pleased with his driving this weekend. Harry Campey amazingly drove from grid 34 to finish 14th and if the race had been any longer would have been in the top ten!! Credit to him for carrying on trying and giving 100% all weekend. Both these Minimax drivers are improving at a fast rate and I really can't wait to get them back "home" to PFi next week.
Then it was the turn of Tom Taylor again. Now on slicks he showed just how good he is with a text book start and some fantastic overtaking, he charged up from the back to 13th in two laps!!! Unfortunately the Taylor-Whilton curse came back and lady luck played her hand one last time. While Tom was overtaking two more he was clipped and spun, leaving him stuck in the Whilton mud!! However a fantastic weekend.
My thanks to Shaun, Craig and James - 100% again from my staff. Thanks to Amy for the food and drinks and a big thanks to all the people behind the scenes at Whilton mill kart club. The meeting ran to the minute as per programme and even in the awful conditions.. well done.
Well that's it for this week off for a well earned game of golf now before the HUK circus heads 4 PFi on Thursday ready to do it all again!!
Happy racing!!
Wardy.
Well, what a hectic start to the year!! After all that bad weather and cancelled meetings and test days in December and January we went straight into back to back PFi meetings then up the long, long road to Rowrah followed by Shennington. Super One is almost here and I think we're just about ready.
